A bit on the subject of religion

In between ranting I go and have a look on His Grace's site for a little intellectual stimulation as theology is one of my interests; from there today I went for a ramble around, link to link, as you do, and I stumbled on this blog in which a priest is talking about 'the sacrement' and communion.
I am a Christian but have read and re-read the bible to try to get my head around this one. Jesus at the last supper broke bread and drank wine with his friends and said that when you do this, think of me (bread as the body and wine as blood), I'm ok with that. Somehow this has been taken, moulded, extrapolated and interpreted to mean that a priest changes into Christ and the wafer and wine change into flesh and blood which are consumed by the communicant. My objection to this is that Jesus was a Jew, so were his friends. Eating human flesh and drinking human blood would seem a very non-jewish thing to do. I have a simpler explanation and one that I follow.... perhaps Jesus was saying whenever you eat remember that I am flesh and blood, which is real, as real as the food you are eating. I would far rather have a proper glass of wine and some food with like minded friends than ever go to a 'communion' again, I did once, in Salisbury Cathedral, with the Bishop in attendance, never again, yeuck what a ritual. My reading of the gospels and the writings of Paul shape my view of homosexuality, abortion and many other aspects of life. These are my views, not imposed on me by any priesthood but imposed on me by my belief, from my readings and understanding, my views will certainly not be altered by government decree.
I spent a lot of time studying the particular beliefs and history of Jehovah's Witnesses, a totalitarian 'theocracy' where brainwashing (or to use the nulab expression, altering perceptions) is practiced to extreme measures, no dissent is allowed, on pain of disfellowship and being totally cut off from family and friends.Tracts are published with a list of questions for the 'elder' to ask the meeting. individuals will answer word for word that part of the text which is relevant. Records are kept on everyone in a personal file. There are many parallels with nuLab in the way they work.
I have tried to read the Koran but it is disjointed, rambling and has no narrative. I can make little sense of it. I suppose that is why so much weight is given to the pronouncements of religious leaders by muslims, there is no way a belief system can be extrapolated from the disjointed writings.
I do not trust any sect or cult that relies heavily on a 'leader' reading a holy book and passing the content onto the congregation, that leads to brainwashing. The New Testament is a narrative, it is simple, it is available in the language of the people and when it was translated into the languages of the common man it set people free from the priests. The power of the church crumbled when people were able to read the book and realise that what the priests were saying was not what they themselves were reading.
I was once in a long conversation about this with a very learned and wise Spaniard who said that he wished that Spain had been blessed with a monarch like Henry VIII and that the power of the priesthood had been challenged , It was his view that culture, science and learning leaps ahead and the belief is simplified, stripped of adornment and prospers when the religion is taken back by the people.
Sometimes people suggest that I shouldn't swear as I do, I have countered by saying that when Jesus threw the moneylenders out of the temple he didn't say the equivalent in Hebrew of, I say old chaps, do you mind awfully popping off outside ? (see previous post)

I wonder how muslims would take to expressions like 'Mohammed fucking prophet', 'Mohammed H prophet',Fucking Allah All fucking mighty'. I think there would be a riot.... which would tell you something about Muslims.... and something about Christians.

that's £18million of our taxes wasted then !, Perhaps the twat of a chancellor thinks that useful power at mains voltage can be produced by fucking silly toy windmills on every house; and that the power companies want to fuck about with pissy little amounts of excess power generation if any excess is ever produced at a time the grid needs it. They will, of course, fuck about with it if the chancellor bungs them another wedge of our cash in the form of a subsidy.

I was reminded last night that a fucking great 885 Megawatt Gas fired power station is to be built in Devon , a better place to build a power station is next to Hinkley Point Nuclear power station about 60 miles away and make it a nuclear station and not gasfired. A huge pipeline is going across the west country to cater for this new station, the gas will come from where ?... good old stable and friendly Russia that's not at all controlled by nutters and the Russian Mafia. Natural gas is a valuable chemical feedstock and is far too valuable to burn. It is sheer fucking madness to allow a portable energy source for fixed generation, absolute fucking loopy swivel-eyed madness; the sort of madness indulged in all the time by this fucking mad government. A few gas powered gas-turbine power stations are needed because they can come on line very quickly to cover for surges in demand but to use gas for baseload power generation is complete and utter fucking folly.

Brown then went on to say that landfill tax is going up again.... does no one see a connection with the last statement about power generation ? The sensible thing to do with waste is to burn the fucking stuff and get something back. Cement production uses huge amounts of energy and their kilns could be adapted to take it..... along with all the tyres which are now dumped all over the countryside.

You cannot cut down on the use of stone, if you want building work, roads, and civil engineering projects you need stone. Landfill sites, which we are running out of, are made by digging holes in the ground, mineral extraction makes holes in the ground as a by-product. The value of stone at source is close to bugger all per ton, transport costs make up bulk of cost. Stone from abroad is already being imported, extra tax on extraction will just make for more imports. The recent West Bay Harbour 'improvements' had rock armour imported from france*. From West Bay harbour you can see Portland, Portland comprises just stone, prisons, and a funny breed of people who think it unlucky to say rabbit and who eat local squid boiled in milk, the stone was used for nearly every prestige building project in Victorian times and was used, for example, for building the Cobb, the harbour at Lyme Regis which has stood for centuries. The reason for not using the local Portland stone ?.... apparently it is not durable enough.... Portland has been there since Jurassic times, just how fucking long do they want their poxy little poorly designed harbour to last !

justice system. From April 2007 the government will have a statutory duty to take positive action to eliminate gender discrimination and promote equality under the Equality Act. I have seen little evidence that much preparatory work is in hand in respect of the imminent statutory duty or of any real understanding that treating men and women the same results in inequality of outcome. Equality does not mean treating everyone the same. The new gender equality duty means that men and women should be treated with equivalent respect, according to need. Equality must embrace not just fairness but also inclusivity. This will result in some different services and policies for men and women. There are fundamental differences between male and female offenders and those at risk of offending that indicate a different and distinct approach is needed for women.

I once convinced a lifelong Jehovahs Witness that he was in the wrong religion because his views obviously did not conform to the ‘party line’ of the organisation. Not so common sense

I've just read a bit about a judge talking common sense, not enough but some.... that's a good start,
but where have all the sensible people gone ?. The woman claimed shitloads of money, well I consider £150,000 to be shitloads, because she tripped and fell, breaking a leg.

President of the Queen's Bench Division, Sir Igor Judge, said: 'The accident was plainly not Mrs Cole's fault. The issue is whether it was caused by the negligence of the British Legion.

Now I cannot see that the accident was 'not Mrs Coles fault', it is not at all plain to me.
If I were a judge I would ask
" Did your Mum ever tell you to pick your feet up and look where you are going ?"
